Laser Gum Treatment: How It Works and Who It Suits

Laser gum treatment uses a soft-tissue laser to remove infected gum lining and reduce bacteria in gum pockets, alongside deep cleaning. It usually means less bleeding, less swelling and quicker healing than conventional surgery. It suits many cases of gum disease, but very deep pockets or bone defects may still need surgery. Many patients put off gum treatment because they dread surgery. Dental lasers have changed that for a lot of people. A soft-tissue laser can treat inflamed gum tissue precisely, often without cutting or stitches, while sealing small blood vessels as it works. For the right patient, it makes gum treatment noticeably more comfortable.

How Laser Gum Treatment Works

The laser is used together with scaling and root planing, not instead of it: tartar still has to be removed from the roots.

  • The area is numbed with local anaesthetic
  • A thin laser fibre is guided into the gum pocket to remove the infected lining and reduce bacteria
  • Tartar is cleaned from the root surfaces
  • The laser energy helps seal the tissue, so there is very little bleeding
  • The gum is left to heal against the cleaned root

Benefits Over Conventional Treatment

Patients typically notice the difference in recovery.

  • Little or no bleeding during treatment
  • Less swelling and soreness afterwards
  • Often no incisions or stitches
  • Faster return to normal eating and routines
  • Precise treatment of the diseased tissue only

Who Is It Suitable For?

Laser therapy works well for many patients with mild to moderate gum disease, for pockets that remain after deep cleaning, and for patients anxious about surgery. It is also used to reshape gum tissue, for example in gummy smile correction. Very deep pockets, significant bone defects or cases needing bone regeneration may still be better treated with flap surgery. A periodontal examination decides which approach fits.

Recovery and Aftercare

Most people return to normal activities the same day or the next. Expect mild tenderness for a day or two. Eat soft food on the treated side for a few days, follow the cleaning instructions you are given, and avoid smoking. A follow-up visit checks healing and re-measures the pockets.

Laser Gum Treatment at Our Clinic

At our Kothrud clinic, laser gum therapy is planned and carried out by Dr. Mukesh Chute, an MDS periodontist, as part of a complete gum treatment plan. The laser is one tool among several, alongside deep cleaning and periodontal surgery, chosen according to what your gums actually need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is laser gum treatment painful?

The area is numbed first, so most patients feel little during treatment. Soreness afterwards is usually milder and shorter than after conventional surgery.

Is laser gum treatment better than surgery?

Not always. It is gentler and heals faster, and it suits many cases. Very deep pockets or bone defects may still need surgery for the best result.

Does laser treatment cure gum disease?

It treats the active infection. Like any gum treatment, results last only with good daily cleaning and regular maintenance visits.

How soon can I eat after laser gum treatment?

You can usually eat once the numbness wears off. Stick to soft food and chew on the other side for a few days.

“

Laser gum treatment makes treating gum disease more comfortable for many patients, with less bleeding and quicker healing. It is most effective as part of a full periodontal plan, guided by an examination that shows exactly how deep the disease goes.
